Reference Management

Organize, manage, and cite your research with ease. Reference Management is the core of Citezy - the foundation for all your research work.

Overview

The References feature helps you:

  • Collect citations from multiple sources
  • Organize by collection, tag, or custom grouping
  • Format citations in 20+ styles (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.)
  • Export bibliographies and citation lists
  • Collaborate by sharing reference libraries

Adding References

Method 1: From DOI (Easiest)

  1. Click "Add Reference""From DOI"
  2. Paste the DOI: 10.1234/example.doi
  3. Metadata fills automatically
  4. Review and adjust if needed
  5. Click Save

Example DOI: 10.1038/s41586-020-2012-7

Method 2: From URL

  1. Click "Add Reference""From URL"
  2. Paste the paper URL: https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.13876
  3. System extracts metadata automatically
  4. Review fields and add your notes
  5. Click Save

Supported Sources:

  • arXiv papers
  • Google Scholar
  • PubMed Central
  • ResearchGate
  • IEEE Xplore
  • Most academic publisher sites

Method 3: Manual Entry

  1. Click "Add Reference""Manual Entry"
  2. Select reference type (Journal, Book, Website, etc.)
  3. Fill in fields:
    • Title
    • Authors
    • Year
    • Publication details
    • DOI/URL (if available)
  4. Click Save

Batch Import

  1. Click "Import References"
  2. Choose format: BibTeX, CSV, or paste text
  3. Review the preview
  4. Adjust any fields if needed
  5. Import all at once

Sample CSV Format:

Organizing References

Collections

Collections help organize references by topic:

  1. Click "Create Collection"
  2. Name it (e.g., "Literature Review", "Methodology")
  3. Add references by dragging or selecting
  4. Nest collections for hierarchy

Example Structure:

  • Thesis Project
    • Literature Review
    • Methodology
    • Results & Analysis
    • Citations

Tags

Quick labels for categorizing references:

  1. Add tags while creating a reference
  2. Use consistent tags: #importance:high, #methodology:experiment
  3. Filter by tags: Click tag to see all with that label
  4. Combine tags: Filter by multiple tags at once

Search & Filter

  1. Search - Type to find references by title, author, year
  2. Filter by type - Journal, book, website, etc.
  3. Filter by year - Select date range
  4. Filter by author - Find all papers by someone
  5. Filter by tag - Multiple tag selection

Citation Formats

Citezy supports 20+ citation styles. The most common:

APA 7th Edition

Smith, J., & Jones, B. (2023). Title of article. Journal Name, 15(3), 100-110.

Chicago Manual of Style

Smith, John, and Barbara Jones. "Title of Article." Journal Name 15, no. 3 (2023): 100-110.

MLA 9th Edition

Smith, John, and Barbara Jones. "Title of Article." Journal Name, vol. 15, no. 3, 2023, pp. 100-110.

Harvard

Smith, J. & Jones, B., 2023. Title of article. Journal Name, 15(3), pp.100-110.

How to Use Citation Formats

  1. View citation - Click reference to see formatted versions
  2. Copy citation - Click "Copy" for your chosen format
  3. Change format - Dropdown menu shows all available styles
  4. Generate bibliography - Export full formatted bibliography

Generating Bibliographies

Create formatted reference lists for your papers:

  1. Select references - Check boxes next to references to include
  2. Or select all in a collection
  3. Click "Generate Bibliography"
  4. Choose citation format
  5. Copy or export as PDF/Word

Exporting References

Export Formats

  • BibTeX - For LaTeX documents
  • CSV - For spreadsheets and other tools
  • JSON - For API integrations
  • RIS - For reference management software
  • PDF - Formatted bibliography
  • Word - Document with formatted citations

How to Export

  1. Select references (or "Export all")
  2. Click "Export"
  3. Choose format
  4. File downloads automatically

Tips & Tricks

Duplicate Detection

  • Citezy automatically alerts you if a reference similar to one you're adding already exists
  • Review before adding to avoid duplicates
  • Merge duplicate references if needed

Quick Actions

  • Edit - Click reference to edit metadata
  • Duplicate - Clone a reference for similar citations
  • Archive - Hide old references without deleting
  • Delete - Remove permanently

Bulk Operations

  • Select multiple references (checkbox)
  • Batch add to collection
  • Batch add tags
  • Batch delete

Smart Suggestions

  • Citezy suggests related papers you might want to add
  • View recommendations based on your collection
  • One-click add to your library

Common Issues

Metadata didn't auto-fill?

  • Check the URL or DOI is correct
  • Try a different source
  • Manually fill in the fields

Citation format looks wrong?

  • Different styles format differently (that's normal)
  • Check your citation guide for that format
  • Report formatting issues

Can't find a paper?

  • Try different keywords
  • Search by author
  • Check the paper exists (some are not indexed)

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Cmd/Ctrl+K - Search all references
  • Cmd/Ctrl+N - New reference
  • Cmd/Ctrl+E - Export selected
  • Cmd/Ctrl+B - Generate bibliography

Collaboration

Share Your References

  1. Click "Share Project"
  2. Enter collaborator email
  3. Set permission level:
    • Viewer - Read-only access
    • Editor - Can add and edit references
    • Owner - Full access including deletion
  4. Send invitation

Comment & Discuss

  • Add comments to references
  • Tag collaborators with @mentions
  • Discuss methodology and findings
  • Keep everything organized in one place
